Every generation has a fear, our's is climate change. Although, in fairness, not everyone believes in climate change, so it may not be a generational fear.
I read an article on the Rolling Stone magazine web site that scared me to death, the numbers make it seem dire. It made me resolve to try and take the bus more than I drive - so 3 days a week minimum. It was easy today since it was sunny and warm, but the real test will come when it is wet or in the winter with the cold. As well, the boys will become a factor in Aug and through the school year.
So are we, the human race, responsible for climate change?
On the "no" side is the fact that there have been heating and cooling cycles on the earth long before the industrial revolution. It would be arrogant to assume that our scientific models are 100% correct when it comes to assessing and predicting the future of such a complex system as the global climate.
On the "yes" side is the rate of change that is being observed and how it can directly be correlated to the increase of emissions from man made structures that burn fossil fuels. In grade school science we learn that for every action there is an equal and opposite re-action. It is logical to me that if we are spewing out crap that affects the climate in great quantity, that we must be contributing to any natural forces that are at play. I honestly believe that we need to reduce our use of fossil fuels because we have viable alternatives that are more passive in nature.
So we will continue to install solar panels, I will take the bus and/or walk more, I will continue to NOT idle my car, I will continue to reduce, re-use, re-cycle, I will continue to try and minimize my impact on the earth. Not out of fear, but because I believe it is the right thing to do.
